What is Chapter One?

Chapter One is a student-led program that sends children a brand new book, Our goal at Chapter One is to provide students who don't have accessibility to a reading source with the gift of a book..free of charge. We want to make a change for developing students across America, one school, one chapter at a time!
The Facts
According to the American Physiological Association, approximately 1 in 5 kids live in poverty. Poverty affects student brain development, the ability to complete school, illiteracy, and relationships with others.

Over one-third of low-income students start kindergarten unprepared, and by 4th grade, 50% of these students do not reach the recommended reading level.
​
61% of families living in poverty do not have children's books in their homes, as a result, children living in these conditions have a 50% weaker vocabulary than their peers at the beginning of school.

About Us
Spreading the Gift of Reading
Our members are all Wimberley High School students with a desire to help other young students. The idea sprouted when we discovered that not every school provides kids with accessibility to books. We want to resolve that issue, allowing teachers to fill out an application for their class to have new books sent directly to the school. With your help, we can connect all students to the universal love of a book!
What do we do with your Application?
Following a teacher application, our team gathers new books that are suited for the gender and age level of the class. Then we make unique bookmarks for each student. After carefully boxing up the specialized books and bookmarks, the package is sent straight to your school. Boxed and shipped with love!
